The Art of Not Giving Up (on New Year resolutions)

Every year, many of us begin January with genuine hope and enthusiasm, convinced that this will finally be the year we follow through on our New Year resolutions. And yet, for most people, that motivation begins to fade far too quickly. It is not because we lack willpower, but because resolutions are often made without enough thought about what usually trips us up

Why do most resolutions not last?

  • Motivation fades
  • Life gets busy
  • Missing a few days feels like failure
  • Resolutions are made in the excitement of the moment
  • The goal stops feeling important

To stay committed well beyond the second week of January, it helps to first reflect on what typically causes you to give up. Once you identify that pattern, you can plan how to respond differently.

Step 1:

Know your quitting pattern and plan for it: If you tend to stop after missing a few days, expect that to happen, and restart anyway.

Step 2:

Accept imperfection: You won’t follow the plan 100% of the time. That’s normal!

Step 3:

Choose something that is important and non-negotiable, such as better sleep, balanced meals, quality time with family, or learning a new skill or sport.

Step 4:

Pick a goal with a “spill-over effect”. For example, choosing to prioritise better sleep is a goal with a strong spill-over effect. When you sleep well, your energy levels improve, making it easier to stay focused at work and more patient in relationships. Better sleep also supports healthier food choices, improves mood, strengthens immunity, and increases motivation to exercise. So one change (going to bed earlier or maintaining a consistent sleep routine) can positively impact physical health, emotional well-being, productivity, and relationships all at once.

Step 5:

Turn your resolution into a SMART goal.

Step 6:

Get a support buddy. Having a friend, family member, or accountability partner who encourages you beyond the initial excitement of the New Year can make a significant difference. Mutual support often strengthens commitment for both people.

Step 7:

Write down how your life will be different if you follow through: Take a moment to write down exactly how your life will change if you stay committed to your resolution. Visualizing the difference it will make can help sustain motivation when enthusiasm dips.
